Activists Demand The Shut Down of Immigrant Detention Center in So Cal

FEATURING SALVADOR SARMIENTO – Although the US federal government recently announced it would phase out privately-run federal prisons, that decision apparently did not apply to immigrant detention facilities that the Department of Homeland Security oversees. Under President Obama, the federal government imprisons thousands of undocumented men, women, and even children, labeling them “detainees.”

One such privately run immigrant detention center is located in Southern California’s San Bernardino County, in a small town called Adelanto. The Adelanto Detention Center has been the focus of activism by immigrants’ rights groups under the banner of #ShutDownAdelanto. On Wednesday, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network led an event in Adelanto called Chant Down the Walls, featuring Grammy award winning band La Santa Cecelia.
