FEATURING SUSAN FALUDI – One of the nation’s preeminent feminist authors Susan Faludi, has just written a book about her father called In the Darkroom. Faludi’s journey began in 2004 when her father whom she remembered as a patriarchal man who left her mother, contacted her and asked her to write the story of his transition from male to female. The resulting book is not just an exploration of her personal relationship with the woman who her father became, but an attempt at reconciling who he once was with his gender transition.
Faludi hails from that generation of second wave feminists, who rejected traditional gender norms, which complicated attempts at solidarity with transwomen who embraced those roles. It is her exploration of that aspect of her father’s story that is the most fascinating.
