Federal Judge Squashes Kobach’s Voter ID Rule in Kansas

FEATURING GREG PALAST – Voting rights advocates scored a victory this week when a Federal Judge ruled that the state of Kansas cannot require proof of citizenship in order to register to vote.

Kansas, whose secretary of state Kris Kobach, has led the fight to restrict voting rights in his state and federally, was ordered by Judge Julie A. Robinson of Kansas to permanently ban citizenship requirements for registration.

The judge’s 188-page decision also took aim at Secretary Kobach directly requiring him to complete several hours of legal education before he can renew his license. Kobach slammed the decision vowing to appeal it.

Meanwhile investigative journalist Greg Palast who took on Kobach’s attacks on voting rights in his documentary The Best Democracy Money Can Buy has filed a suit along with the ACLU against the states of Kansas and Ohio over exposing voter data. The US Supreme Court recently affirmed the right of Ohio to purge voter rolls if voters do not vote in a federal election.
