Immigrants, Advocates Rally to Save DACA

FEATURING JUAN ESCALANTE – It has been five years since the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was implemented by President Barack Obama’s administration. Starting in August 2012, DACA offered temporary protection against deportation for young undocumented immigrants who met certain criteria.

The executive action helped in part to fill the legislative vacuum over immigration reform. Hundreds of thousands of young immigrants took advantage of the program, effectively outing themselves to the government in exchange for being able to work and live in the US without fear.

But with Donald Trump in power, DACA is in trouble and the livelihoods and safety of nearly a million young immigrants is at stake. Trump made anti-immigrant policies the centerpiece of his presidential campaign.
