The Dangers of Trump’s “Space Force”

FEATURING DAVID PEDREIRA – President Trump last week announced he was calling on the Pentagon to create a sixth branch of the US Armed Forces – in space. Trump has talked openly about desiring US military supremacy in space in the past. He first raised the idea of a so-called “Space Force” jokingly in a speech in March.

Then, last Monday he formalized his idea. In a speech at the White House, Trump said, “When it comes to defending America, it is not enough to merely have an American presence in space. We must have American dominance in space. We are going to have the Air Force and we are going to have the Space Force, separate but equal.” According to AP, “the directive seemed to take defense officials by surprise.

This week the investment bank Morgan Stanley implied that a creation of a Space Force would be lucrative for big business, saying that outer space was a, “highly relevant investment domain,” and that it could fuel the formation of a trillion dollar economy.
