UN Formally Adopts Historic Nuclear Treaty

FEATURING KEVIN MARTIN – Anti-nuclear activists the world over rejoiced when more than 120 countries at the United Nations last week formally adopted a “Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.”

The treaty is strongly worded and requires that signatories, “never under any circumstances … develop, test, produce, manufacture, otherwise acquire, possess or stockpile nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.”

In September the UN will formally open the treaty for signatures and once at least 50 nations have signed on, nuclear weapons prohibition becomes international law.

Unsurprisingly the US boycotted the treaty adoption process along with 8 other nuclear-armed countries.
