FEATURING DAVID DAYEN – House Republicans last week passed a hastily put together bill under the banner of the American Healthcare Act after months of embarrassment over failing to repeal the Affordable Care Act. A small number of Republicans joined Democrats in voting against the bill but it still passed with a few votes to spare. Lawmakers did not even wait for the Congressional Budget Office to publish the bill’s fiscal impact before voting on it. The bill leaves in place some aspects of Obamacare but makes large cuts to Medicaid and undermines the pre-existing coverage ban.
Now, 13 Republicans Senators are working to craft their own version of the bill and have come under criticism for being unable to find a single female Senator to join their all-male team. The GOP has only a slim majority in the Senate so passage could be challenging.
