FEATURING MICHELLE WHITTAKER – Voter turnout in the 2016 general election dipped to a 20-year low reported CNN. Still, more people actually voted for Hillary Clinton than Donald Trump but Trump won because Clinton’s support was far more concentrated in some states – mostly those on the coast. When that happens, the system of winner-take-all elections results in a President that loses the popular vote. It’s only happened a few times in US history – the last time was when Al Gore won the popular vote but lost the election.

But why do we have a system where a candidate can win one more vote than his or her rival in any given state and claim 100% of all electoral votes? To answer that question that many Americans are now asking we have to examine our history.
