FEATURING CHRISTOPHER EMDIN – Hollywood loves a good story about how a heroic and earnest young, white teacher single handedly saves an urban public school of poor black and brown kids by teaching them to fulfill their potential. But that fantasy is also what drives many well-meaning white teachers from privileged backgrounds to teach in poor schools. How well equipped are they really? And do they really end up helping more than hurting?
Christopher Emdin has written a new book addressing those questions and exploring an innovative pedagogical approach that works.
Christopher Emdin, Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Technology at Teachers College, Columbia University, where he also serves as Associate Director of the Institute for Urban and Minority Education.
