FEATURING GLENN SCHERER – Amidst the on-going political turmoil in Brazil, Latin America’s largest nation, are struggles between environmentalists and President Michel Temer over protections of the Amazon. The majority of the Amazon rainforest lies in Brazil and represents half the world’s rainforests. Temer recently vetoed bill that Brazil’s Congress passed that would have reduced the size of protected Amazon reserves, handing a major victory to environmentalists. But the country’s Environment minister is drafting another, similar bill that would also reduce protections for the Amazon, create loopholes allowing ranchers to graze, and encourage logging.
