Can “For The People Act” Restore Voting Rights Targeted by GOP?

STEPHANY ROSE SPAULDING - The Senate Rules committee on Tuesday held a mark-up session to amend Senate Bill 1, the For The People Act, a sweeping reform bill to restore voting rights across the nation and undermine the influence of moneyed interests in elections. The House already passed its version of the bill in March with a vote of 220 to 210 along strict party lines.

Although the bill’s provisions are popular with voters—even Republican ones—the GOP has staunchly opposed it, seeing voter restrictions rather than voting rights as its pathway to political power. To that end states like Georgia and Florida have passed state-level anti-voting bills and Texas is considering a similar approach.

Meanwhile, a deeply partisan recount of votes from the November 2020 election in Arizona has been riddled with security issues and has embarrassed even some Republicans in their party’s bid to prove against factual evidence that the race was rigged against their favorite candidate.
