FEATURING ANNE ROLFES – Gulf Coast environmental activists shut down an auction of offshore oil and gas leases at the New Orleans Superdome on March 23rd. Hundreds of local and indigenous activists were joined by environmental and anti-fracking groups from around the country in the latest chapter of what is being called the “Keep It In the Ground” movement. Activists marched to the Superdome and confronted oil and gas industry representatives who were present.

At stake is a proposed lease of 43 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico. Not only does the auction of the lease undermine President Obama’s stated goal to move away from fossil fuel, but also flies in face of two major climate and fossil-fuel related disasters to have struck the Gulf Coast in recent history: Hurricane Katrine, and the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
