FEATURING COURTNEY MORRIS – Honduras remains in crisis since the murder of Indigenous Rights activist Berta Cáceres on March 3, 2016. Cáceres was a prominent political activist and leader of the Lenca people and winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize. She was also one of the founders of Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH as it’s known by its Spanish acronym).
Now, a second member of COPINH, 38-year old Nelson García, was murdered just days later. He was shot in the face by unidentified gunmen.
Meanwhile more than 700 academics and activists in the United States sent a letter to US Secretary of State John Kerry urging him to suspend ties with the Honduran government.
Courtney Morris, assistant professor of African American and Women’s Studies at Penn State University. She was one of the signatories to the letter to Kerry.
