FEATURING DR. JENNIFER HARVEY – Many Americans are still perplexed when people of color take offence at white Americans darkening their skin to look like non-whites. There is not nearly enough education about the pervasive history of racism and racist phenomena like “black face,” in the US. Far too many white youth in particular are still raised – by well-meaning parents – with the idea that being color-blind means being anti-racist.
Now, a new book attempts to guide the parents of white American children on how to foster a real consciousness of race and racism, and thereby raise anti-racist children.
Dr. Jennifer Harvey, Professor of Religion at Drake University, author of Dear White Christians: For Those Still Longing For Racial Reconciliation. Her new book is called Raising White Kids: Bringing Up Children in a Racially Unjust America. She has contributed to the New York Times and Huffington Post.
