FEATURING BOB DEANS - Our nation and our world is overrun by billionaires and bigots, but they are few and we are many. On this series, exclusive to subscribers of Rising Up With Sonali and viewers of Free Speech TV, we’ll hear from organizers in the movements for social justice, and dig into the nuts and bolts of values, strategies, tactics, narratives, and building power.
This week on Rising Up for Justice, Bob Deans, the senior strategic advisor for the Natural Resources Defense Council, joins us. Bob is the former president of the White House Correspondents Association and has authored or co-written four NRDC books on climate, the political attack on the environment and the Deepwater Horizon disaster. Bob spoke with Sonali Kolhatkar about what it means to defend Earth's natural resources.
ROUGH TRANSCRIPT:
Sonali Kolhatkar: The organization's name, Natural Resources Defense Council, NRDC, hints at what it's about, but how do you explain to people that you've just met what it is that NRDC does? What are its main goals?
Bob Deans: Sonali, we have one mission. It's very simple, and it's to protect the natural world as if our very lives depend on it, because they do. And our work is very much grounded in bedrock American principles, government by the consent of the governed, pursuit of equity and justice, the rule of law, sound science, and our determination to leave our children a livable world, a world, in fact, better than the one that we found.
And it's a very challenging moment for this because today, these ideals, these principles, are under attack by a radical political agenda unlike we've ever seen. So, we're doing everything we can to stand up to that agenda and to set the table for further progress in the future.
