On September 20th, 2018 the ‘She The People‘ Summit took place in San Francisco bringing together hundreds of women of color elected to office, running for office, and supporting women’s political power.

The event was organized by Democracy in Color.

Rising Up host Sonali Kolhatkar attended the summit and spoke with a number of inspiring women activists about their work. Special thanks to KPFA Pacifica Radio for making this coverage possible.

Sayu Bhojwani is the founder and president of New American Leaders, the only national organization focused on preparing immigrant leaders to run for public office at the local and state levels.


A’shanti Gholar is the Political Director of Emerge America.


Angelica Salas is the Executive Director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights in LA.


Teresa C. Younger is the President and CEO of the Ms. Foundation for Women.


Ashlee Marie Preston is a Transgender activist who famously called Caitlyn Jenner a fraud at an event last year, and briefly ran for a seat in the California State Assembly.
