FEATURING JULIETA GARIBAY – A federal judge has blocked an anti-immigrant law in Texas that was set to take effect this Friday. Senate Bill 4 was a bill in line with President Donald Trump’s desire to undermine so-called “Sanctuary cities” which draw a line between immigration and law enforcement. Judge Orlando Garcia wrote in his decision that among other things the law violates the First Amendment. He said, “SB 4 clearly targets and seeks to punish speakers based on their viewpoint on local immigration enforcement policy.”
The ruling is a welcome relief for immigrant communities in Texas who have been struggling with multiple assaults including the impact of Hurricane Harvey while ICE checkpoints remained open, and an anticipated decision by Trump to cancel the DACA program protecting undocumented youth.
