FEATURING ALEXANDER KLIMBURG – The 2016 US Presidential election was a good example of how the Internet is playing an increasingly large role in our societies. The idea that Russian hackers attempted to interfere in the vote tallies, and that fake news from both inside and outside the US swayed voters significantly, exemplify the powerful role of the digital world.
Internet technology is far outpacing the ability of governments to regulate cyberspace and that has consequences that can be both good and bad for societies.
Alexander Klimburg, program director at the Hague Centre for Strategic Studies, a non-resident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, and an associate and former fellow at the Belfar Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University. He has advised a number of governments and international organizations on cybersecurity and internet governance. He is the author of the new book, The Darkening Web: The War for Cyberspace.
