But the chief instigator of the attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election, former President Donald Trump, remains free and has now taken to calling the convicted “hostages.” Trump promises he will free them once he’s back in office. The larger question of the health of American democracy also remains tenuous as pro-Trump lawmakers have attempted to erode voting rights and fuel racism.
