FEATURING OLGA TOMCHIN – Thirty-one year old Mayra Machado is a typical American woman, mother of three, who was working in the field of patient care. But, because she is not a US citizen, she has been imprisoned in a detention center in Louisiana for the past year and could be deported to her home country of El Salvador. Her crime? An unpaid traffic ticket.
While President Obama has assured us that the only undocumented immigrants being deported under his watch are violent criminals, Mayra Machado’s case belies that. Her children and family have been on a relentless quest to free her and stop her deportation.
If this is what immigrants have faced under Obama, what is to come under Donald Trump, who made targeting immigrants a central plank of his election campaign?
