FEATURING WENONAH HAUTER – Everyone from environmental organizations to President Obama, have touted the benefits of natural gas as an environmentally friendly fossil fuel. The basis of that support comes from the fact that natural gas burns more cleanly than coal or oil. But the majority of natural gas that is produced these days comes from the controversial practice of hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” an invasive and disruptive process that results in methane leaks, ground water pollution, and even earthquakes. Communities reeling from the devastation wrought by fracking have risen up against it all over the world.
