FEATURING SARAH JAFFE – Nearly 70% of Irish voters on Friday chose to repeal their nation’s 8th amendment on abortion. The deeply Catholic nation has seen a cultural shift over several years and despite well-funded campaigns to preserve the Constitution, the pro-choice position prevailed.
The vote does not however mean that abortion is now legal across Ireland. Existing laws banning abortion are still on the books and are expected to be challenged in the coming months and years.
